Captain's Log; star date Thursday 1st September
We now get to the part we like the most… flooring installation. Our man Steve, part of Maidstone's renowned LVT Mafiosa Floorlayers, gets cracking on Amtico Flooring's Signature Ink Wash Wood EP107. Yesterday, Steve painstakingly went through the sub-floor preparation procedure which is seriously important to get right. Today, he's enjoying the benefit of a good previous day's work.
Prowling around like an anxious Tiger, Steve constantly eyes up his initial setting out. With the single plank border already laid, Steve now concentrates laying the large herringbone planks… with bevelled edges.
A few hours on and Steve is making cracking progress. 80% completed, Steve is closing in on successfully finishing the task.
Looking like a modern day Leonardo DaVinci, our maestro gets close up and personal with the Amtico Flooring Signature, around the sunken electrical box.
Now we turn our attentions to getting ready for installing Kersaint Cobb's Sisal Tigers Eye Charcoal. Sisal can be installed by adhering directly to the sub-floor or it can be used with an underlay. Here, because we love a bit of springy comfort, we are going to install our Sisal with Cloud 9 Contract 8mm polyurethane underlay. The Cloud 9 Contract underlay is stuck to the sub-floor, using tackifier adhesive.
Then, the underlay has permanent bond adhesive troweled on and the Sisal Tigers Eye gets, well, permanently adhered to it!
The Sisal has to be left un-trimmed around the edges. Sisal, being a natural product, absorbs moisture from the adhesive, resulting in the carpet contracting. This process takes around 24 hours, so tomorrow, our Mike (the one doing the work - above) will be able to fully trim the edges to the skirting boards.
Please note, it is extremely important that for Sisal installations to go successfully, you must have someone just standing about, trying to look active. Here, Lawrence can be seen taking this role very, very seriously. Not many people have these skills and Lawrence can be hired out for similar installations but note, his high level of expertise does not come cheap.
And that's as far as it goes for today, folks. A little more work will be needed tomorrow.
Showroom re-opening on schedule for 2nd week in September.
